Tips for Preparing to Move

Let’s face it, moving is stressful no matter what your situation. If you’re downsizing, what do you do with all that extra stuff? Will your furniture work in your new place? Will it fit? Then there are all the service disconnections and reconnections. The list can seem endless.

It’s also an exciting time and my goal is to help you enjoy the experience by minimizing the stress.

If you are moving out of one place and into another, I will ensure your home is prepped and ready for sale and provide you with the resources you need to transition to your new home.

From decluttering services to temporary storage and staging, your home will sparkle and show its best side to buyers. And if renovations are needed, I have the resources you need to get them done and will manage it all for you.

Here are some quick tips for preparing your move:

  1. Plan ahead. The further out you can start planning, the less stressful your move will be. Research and hire a mover early to ensure you are ready and booked for moving day. You don’t want to settle for “Joe’s Pretty Good Movers Who Don’t Break Much” because you left it too late.
  2. Create a budget. In addition to moving costs, consider purchases for your new home, service connection and disconnection fees, repairs and other costs to get your house ready for sale.
  3. Take inventory. Identify items you’ll be taking with you, items to sell or donate and things to recycle or throw away. Start collecting boxes and pack a little every day.
  4. Address changes. Make a list of important people and items that will need to be updated, like friends and family, your doctor, your driver’s licence, banks, the payroll department at work, subscriptions, etc. Ensure you have mail forwarding in place to catch anything you’ve missed.
  5. Pets. Make sure your pets have a safe place to be during your move. This is a stressful time for them and open doors on moving day can make it easy for pets to escape. Consider boarding them for the day or having a friend watch them.
