The Best Ways to Get Around Toronto

Raynor Powell • January 29, 2019

Love it or hate it, one of the best ways to get around Toronto is by public transportation, more commonly referred to as the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission). No matter where you need to get to in the city, there is a subway, streetcar and/or bus to get you there.

TTC

Named the best transit system in North Americain 2017 by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) - much to the chagrin of many of its daily users - it is not without its flaws. Delays, overcrowding, and track work can hamper daily commutes, but there have been many improvements made in recent years. It remains the most economical way to get around Toronto - excluding walking or riding your bike, of course!

Taxis/Uber/Lyft

If you need to get somewhere quickly and directly, taxis are fairly easy to come by in the downtown core (except maybe in bad weather when everyone seems to want one!). However, it is not the most economical and taxi fares can add up quickly.

With Uber and Lyft now operating throughout the city, you may find these better alternatives. With their booking apps, it makes it easy to find a ride quickly, see who your driver is, have your destination mapped out and pay through the app without having to worry about whether or not the taxi driver will accept your credit card.

Car

If you really need to take your car, Toronto’s grid system makes it fairly easy to get around. The more you get to know the city, the easier it gets as you learn about the little lane way detours, places to avoid and where the best parking is.

As a Realtor, I drive a lot in the city and love to show my buyers the best ways to get around the neighbourhoods they are exploring.

Walking

If you live and work in the downtown core, walking is a great way to get around - even during the cold Winter months. The tall buildings provide a lot of protection from the elements and the underground PATH systemcan get you virtually anywhere in the core without having to step foot outside.

Bikes

Finally, if you’re so inclined, Toronto has a Bike Share programof 3,750 bikes across 360 locations around the city. From single trips to annual passes, it’s a healthy and efficient way to get around the city.

During the pandemic, condo owners and investors saw double-digit price growth in their units. This prompted some people to sell their investments and use the proceeds to upgrade their own living spaces. But what if - in the process of inspecting your investment to prepare it for sale - you discover your tenant is a hoarder?
