Surviving Isolation in Your Condo

Raynor Powell • May 13, 2020
I’m fairly certain that when you bought or leased your current condo, you didn’t expect to be spending so much time in it! We’re all adjusting to new living and working arrangements as we deal with this new isolation-led reality.

For condo owners, this can be an even more stressful time due to typically smaller living spaces plus the added complications of navigating shared spaces like elevators, stairwells and entrances. And getting deliveries can also be a challenge for some.

So how do you stay sane during this time?

One of the first things you should do, if possible, is create a space in your condo where you can go to relax, read or meditate. An area where you can be free from too many distractions. If you have a balcony, this can be a perfect place to help calm your mind by focusing on blue skies, trees, water or simply the beauty of the skyline, depending on your location.

The importance of this space is to separate yourself from negative distractions like the news, social media or even an annoying roommate! In times like these we need time to focus on positive things. Read a good book. Watch a funny movie. Have a fun Zoom party with friends. Practice mindfulness and meditation.

Exercise is also important for both your physical and emotional health. As we may not be getting out as much, and our condo facilities are closed, we need to find ways to get exercise indoors. Yoga, Strength training, Pilates and more can all be done in the comfort of your living room.

And more and more gyms and fitness experts are offering free sessions online, giving you many options for exercising at all times of the day. No excuses! Check out the Parlour Project, a local online initiative that offers a wide range of online classes for free from volunteers across the GTA, from yoga to strength training, meditation and more. Your local gym may be offering classes online. Personal trainers are going online. You have many options...maybe even more than before!

Above all, stay safe and respect others during this time. Especially our front-line workers who are feeling the stress of this pandemic more than most. Our brokerage recently set up a GoFundMe campaign called Feed the Need Toronto to help support our front-line workers. If you are able, consider donating to this worthy cause.

During the pandemic, condo owners and investors saw double-digit price growth in their units. This prompted some people to sell their investments and use the proceeds to upgrade their own living spaces. But what if - in the process of inspecting your investment to prepare it for sale - you discover your tenant is a hoarder?
