How to Get Your Condo Ready for Winter

Prepping your condo for winter? It’s not like you need to shovel the driveway! But there are certainly things you can do to ensure you stay cozy and warm in your condo this winter.

Maintaining a comfortable temperature can be a tricky one for some condos. Depending on the size and number of windows you have, as well as the direction your unit faces, your condo could end up being too warm or too cold during the winter months.

Here are some tips for keeping your condo comfortable:

  1. Check your windows
Ensure your windows are properly sealed to prevent warm air escaping and cold air getting in. If the sun is making your rooms too warm, consider installing blinds that keep the heat from the sun out. Alternatively, you could apply some window insulation film that helps to reduce heat transfer.

  2. Adjust your humidity
We all need to add a little extra moisturizer in the winter as cold air dries out your skin. Consider a humidifier for the winter months to ensure there is enough moisture in the air. This can also make your room feel warmer. Monitor the humidity level though. Too much and you could end up with condensation on your windows and eventually damage to floors or walls. Too little and you could start seeing cracks in wood floors, cabinets, doorframes and more as this can cause wood to shrink.

  3. Keep your heating system running
It may be tempting to conserve energy during the day when you’re at work by turning off the heat; however, turning your fancoil or heat pump off completely can cause problems. Simply turn your heat down while you’re away as this will keep the components in your system active and running and prevent the risk of sticking or jamming on restart. Ensure your filters are clean as well to ensure proper air flow.

  4. Use your ceiling fan
Ceiling fans are a great way to help regulate the temperature in your condo. If your unit is too warm, turn your fan on counterclockwise. The airflow created from pushing the air down will help to cool you off. (You can also use your kitchen range hood and bathroom vent to draw warm air out of your unit.) To warm things up, use the clockwise direction on a low setting to circulate the warmer air that has risen to the ceiling.

  5. Rug it up
If your condo has all hardwood, laminate or concrete flooring (as many newer ones do), you could be stepping on a cold floor when you wake up in the morning! Consider adding some area rugs throughout your unit to provide some extra warmth (and style!) during the cold months.
