Getting Your Condo Ready for Spring

Raynor Powell • April 29, 2022

While Spring is technically here, Mother Nature doesn’t seem ready to fully embrace it yet! But that doesn’t mean you can’t get ready for the warmer weather that is soon (I hope) to come.

Spring cleaning is something we humans like to do to shake off the cold, dry cobwebs of the winter - literally and figuratively - and start fresh as the warmer weather and longer days begin. As we start opening up windows to fresh air and more light shines in our homes, we are energized to shake off the gloomy winter feel and make our homes sparkle.

While some of us embrace the annual deep clean, for many it can seem like an overwhelming chore. If you fall somewhere in the latter pool, here are six helpful tips to get you started.

Tip #1: Get Organized

Before you get started, make sure you have all the cleaning supplies you need from all-purpose cleaners to sponges, mops and rags. Stay away from harsh chemicals, like beach, or use sparingly and in well-ventilated areas. Check out these “Martha recommended” cleaning products to get you started.

Next, clear the clutter. Cleaning will be a lot easier if you get rid of unwanted items and tidy up. There’s no point in making things harder than they have to be!

Tip #2: Go Room by Room

If you try to do your whole house or condo at once, you’ll quickly become overwhelmed. Pick a room, like your bedroom, and clean it from top to bottom. That feeling of accomplishment when you finish will give you a boost to tackle the next room.

Tip #3: Dust First, Floors Last

When you dust and wipe down surfaces, some of that dirt will end up on your floors, so tackle the dusting first and leave the floors to last. Think of it as a top down approach. Dust gets everywhere, including walls and ceiling fixtures. Wipe overhead fans and lights and use a damp cloth to wipe down walls. A trick my mother used was tying a damp cloth around a mop head to get to the high places. It’s also a lot easier on your arms!

Tip #4: Get Into the Nooks and Crannies

It’s only once a year so don’t just clean what you can see. If you have bookshelves, take everything off and give them a thorough cleaning. Wipe down everything on the shelves as well. Use a vacuum to get into tight spots. Get in behind your appliances where dust and dirt gets trapped unseen. You may even find those lost socks!

In bathrooms and the kitchen, make sure you clean the tile grout. These are porous surfaces and great places for germs and mold. Hydrogen peroxide and water or baking soda and vinegar are two simple solutions to clean grout, along with a stiff, fine brush (like an old toothbrush). And while you’re at it, be sure to reseal any cracks or gaps.

Tip #5: Don’t Forget the Windows

You want to make sure you’re getting all the spring and summer light in! Clean your windows inside and out. If you’re in a condo, inaccessible outside windows are the responsibility of the building owner. If you have a balcony however, those windows are your responsibility. Give them a good scrubbing to get the city grime off and be sure to repair any gaps or cracks in the seals around the windows and doors.

Tip #6: Safety Check

Finally, spring is a good time to change your smoke detector batteries (should be done twice a year) and inspect your fire extinguisher. Clean out your dryer vent and exhaust fans, check HVAC filters and replace burnt out light bulbs.

A thorough spring clean will have you feeling refreshed and ready for the warmer weather. But don’t try to tackle it all at once. As I said above, go room by room and don’t try to get everything done in a day. And if it’s really just too much to take on, you can always hire a professional!

During the pandemic, condo owners and investors saw double-digit price growth in their units. This prompted some people to sell their investments and use the proceeds to upgrade their own living spaces. But what if - in the process of inspecting your investment to prepare it for sale - you discover your tenant is a hoarder?
