Living in a condo means you are surrounded by other people. Unlike a detached house, you need to pass through common hallways, stairways, elevators and lobbies to go in and out of your home.
As we are all doing our best to stay isolated at this time, you may still need to leave your building from time to time, especially if you are an essential worker or you simply need to stock up on supplies.
From a number of weeks ago when hand sanitizers were placed in lobbies to the new reality where many common areas are now closed, condo buildings are doing their part to stop the spread of COVID-19. This includes daily maintenance and disinfecting of common areas to changing the way deliveries are handled.
Some property managers are wiping down lobbies, elevators and common areas every 15 minutes. And with increases in the number of deliveries, building staff are taking deliveries directly to a tenant’s door and ensuring they receive it.
While this may all sound extreme, extreme measures are what are required to flatten the curve and stop this virus from spreading. We all need to do our part.
Here are some tips to help you stay safe:
- Keep your distance.
Stay at least 6 feet away from other people. In elevators, pick your corner and face away from anyone else that might be in there.
- Don’t touch.
If you can, wear gloves and try not to touch railings, counters, door handles and other high use areas as much as possible.
- Getting a delivery?
Let your building concierge know and arrange for a safe pick up.
- Wash your hands! Need I say more.
- Keep your condo clean. It is Spring cleaning season after all. While we have extra time on our hands, here are some great resources for cleaning your condo:

Be sure to check with your building manager to see what measures they have put in place to keep residents and staff safe during this time. And if they are not doing enough, let them know!
